In a previous poll, held by a different pollster, Peñalosa had a comfortable 24.8% versus 12.7% lead over Petro.

However, according to Semana’s poll, Petro is leading the race with 15.4% of the interviewees responding they would vote for the socialist and 14.6% for the former mayor who only Saturday formalized his alliance with former President Alvaro Uribe.

Third favorite is Cambio Radical candidate Carlos F. Galan, the son of Luis Carlos Galán, a presidential candidate who was murdered by hitmen of drug lord Pablo Escobar in 1989.

Petro is a former M-19 guerrilla and was senator for the socialist Polo Democratico party until after his failed run for the 2010-2014 presidency for that party. Peñalosa was mayor of Bogota from 1998 until 2000.

Bogota will take to the polls in October to vote for the successor of Samuel Moreno, who is suspended for alleged corruption and was temporarily replaced by Clara Lopez..
