Locals in Colombia’s northern coastal department of Bolivar have begun to replace donkeys with motorcycles as a means of transportation.
On the Caribbean Coast in the Santa Rosa del Norte municipality, work animals have reigned for years as the primary means of transporting goods and people in the countryside. But now technology has started to take over, with local residents expressing a new-found preference for speed and modernity.
The donkeys, meanwhile, are being neglected by their former owners and are restlessly wandering the streets. A local referred to the animals as “disappeared,” stating that “they are no longer used, because motorcycles have replaced them.”
Certain residents have resisted the change. “No, no, I won’t change it … because they [donkeys] help me a lot,” said another local. The majority of area residents, however, have replaced their sombreros with helmets, as modern technology becomes the new mode of transportation.
