Former DAS Director Maria del Pilar Hurtado was asked Tuesday to submit a testimony to a Colombian investigation team regarding the Uribe wiretap scandal.
Hurtado fled Colombia in 2010 and was subsequently granted political asylum in Panama. Despite Colombian requests for her extradition, Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli has reiterated on several occasions that Hurtado will remain under political asylum in his country. Colombia recently asked Interpol to issue an international arrest warrant for the former DAS director.
Colombia’s House Investigation and Accusation Committee, in charge of conducting the wiretapping investigation into former President Alvaro Uribe, has now asked permission to send a team of investigators to Panama. The pending request would allow investigators to interview Hurtado in Panama, and obtain a formal testimony.
An investigation coordinator told El Espectador that Hurtado’s testimony is “indispensable” to the developing case.
