Despite a looming arrest warrant against him, Bernardo Moreno, chief of staff under Colombia’s former President Alvaro Uribe, says he will not seek political asylum.
Following news that the country’s prosecutor general is seeking to file charges against Moreno and former DAS director Maria del Pilar Hurtado over their alleged role of government opponents and critics, the former official sent Colombian media a five-point communique stressing he will face justice.
In the press statement, Moreno said that he hopes “the judges will demonstrate to the international community that in Colombia fair trials do exist.”
According to Uribe’s former chief of staff, he has been discredited by the media over his alleged role in the wiretap scandal.
Colombia’s inspector general barred the former official from holding public office for 20 years after ruling Moreno was guilty of ordering the illegal spying on supreme court judges, journalists, human rights workers and politicians.
