Colombian stand-up comedian Andres Lopez has taken his show “Ball of Letters” to Australia to prove that his humor is universal.
The comedian will tour Australia, performing at the Sydney Comedy Festival, as well as shows in Melbourne and Brisbane, where subtitles will be projected onto a big screen during the show.
In an interview after arrival down under, Lopez told journalists his humor is directed not just to Colombians, but to an international audience. He named as examples the universality of comedians such as Mexico’s “Cantiflas” and the British series “Little Britain,” stating that international audiences will learn the jokes.
The Bogota native recalled that the most difficult public he has had to face was a group of elderly people in Madrid in 2008, a performance in which he managed to conjure up just one smile after 15 minutes and “two kilos of sweat” in effort.
However, it was during this performance in Spain where the comedian learned how to make local people from another country laugh.
Lopez is considered a pioneer of stand-up comedy in Colombia. For over 17 years he has been performing his “Ball of Letters” show, a subtle analysis of Colombian society.
After touring Australia, the comedian will head to Venezuela, a country where his comedy appears to have hit the right chords, as he has performed over 150 shows.
