A prosecutor in the east Colombian city of Bucaramaga on Saturday prevented the premature release of an important FARC guerrilla by filing a new arrest warrant.
FARC member “Chucho,” one of the right-hand men of slain guerrilla commander “Mono Jojoy” and convicted for his role in the bombing of an exclusive club in Bogota in 2003, was ordered to be released after a judge ruled his rights had been violated during his arrest.
According to the judge, the arresting officers had failed to tell the guerrilla on what charges he was arrested and under which authority.
According to newspaper El Tiempo, “Chucho” was arrested at the gates of the Bucaramanga prison where he had been staying on kidnapping charges and was immediately taken into custody again.
In 2001, the guerrilla also succeeded to leave prison early because prosecutors failed to file charges within legal limits.
