Colombian President Álvaro Uribe gave in to one of the demands of
indigenous protesters in Cauca and offered to buy land to compensate
the land that had been stolen from the natives by paramilitaries.
Indigenous protesters had blocked south Colombia’s most important highway for a number of days this week demanding the government to return the stolen land, better healthcare and education and protection from paramilitary groups.
Indigenous leaders Saturday talked to several ministers of the Uribe administration to find a way out of the violence between protesters and riot police. Two indigenous were killed and over seventy persons injured during violent clashes.
