A woman in Cali has become the first person in Colombia to undergo surgery in which a special glue named “Kryptonite” is used to speed up bone regeneration and recovery, El Tiempo reported Wednesday.
The open-heart surgery, for which the Kryptonite glue is primarily used, was deemed to be a success after the elderly patient’s breastbone recovered in a period of just 18 hours instead of the customary weeks that it would take to heal without the glue.
Roberto Diaz del Castillo was the pioneering Colombian surgeon who led the operation, and later expressed his hope that the substance would begin to be more widely used throughout the country following this early success.
“The best thing is that the necessary analgesia [the relieving of pain without loss of consciousness] will be much gentler with respect to other patients,” he explained.
Developed in Connecticut, U.S., the treatment has been tested on some 500 patients and is used for a variety of other medical problems such as surgical trauma, neural and spinal injuries, and orthopedic surgery.
