Colombia 1 of 7 most promising global economies: Fortune

by Nat Smith January 26, 2015

US business magazine Fortune has named Colombia as one of the world’s seven most prosperous and promising economies.

Colombia offers “opportunities that Brazil and Chile, let alone Argentina and Venezuela, cannot,”  stated the report.

The country’s president, Juan Manuel Santos, gave the accolade added attention when he proudly announced its importance to more than 100 French entrepreneurs and potential investors in an address in Paris on Monday.

“Fortune magazine has just said that Colombia is one of the seven most attractive economies in the world to invest,” said Santos, explaining that “this is very important because it brings investment that creates jobs,” Santos said in his address on Monday.

In naming Colombia as one of the “lucky seven,” the publication opined that the Colombian President would reach a peace deal with left-wing FARC rebels by the year’s end, enabling the South American nation to “expand the rule of law, deepen rural development, and attract investors worried primarily about security.”

Colombia was one of “seven smart bets,” containing “markets where it would seem good governance and sustainable growth are likely to go hand in hand,” stated Fortune.

“The Santos administration and opposition leaders broadly agree on economic policy, meaning political battles are unlikely to undermine the business environment,” added Fortune.

The highly reputed US publication, which competes with Forbes and Bloomberg for the business media market in the United States, released these findings in its February 2015 edition of Fortune magazine.
