Since the beginning of this month, Canadian citizens traveling to Colombia have to pay a COP160,000 or $80 entry fee.
The measure was imposed in response to Canada’s entry fee for Colombians.
According to Colombia’s Foreign Ministry, Canadians can still travel to Colombia without having to get a visa first, but have to pay the entry fee when passing through Migration either at the airport.
The Canadian entry fee has to be paid on Colombia’s mainland with the exception of Cartagena.
Canadian travelers to the Caribbean islands of San Andres and Providencia are exempt from paying the entry fee.
Canadian dollars are reportedly not accepted by immigration officials. Instead, the fee must be paid in US dollars or Colombian pesos.
The fee is charged to both tourists and diplomats alike.
According to the Ministry, some 41,000 Canadians visited Colombia in 2013. In the first nine months of 2013, 32,000 Canadians entered the South American country.
