The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court will begin a preliminary investigation of the governor of the Antioquia department, Luis Alfredo Ramos, for alleged paramilitary ties, W Radio reported Wednesday.
Speaking from a U.S. jail, extradited AUC member Juan Carlos Sierra, alias “El Tuso,” said that his bloc supported Ramos in the Senate race of 2002, reported Radio Nacional de Colombia.
The current governor ran with the Team Colombia political movement for Senate in 2002 and won.
In 2008 Ramos was inaugurated as governor of Antioquia for a period of three years. His term ends in December of this year.
The preliminary hearing will help the court determine if there is enough evidence to proceed with a formal investigation of the governor.
The high court will release dates and times for the proceedings in the coming days.
