The director of Colombian intelligence agency DAS, Felipe Muñoz, says that he will not resign over the agency’s illegal wiretapping of government opponents.
The director made his statement after emerging from a nine hour examination by the prosecutor general over the illegal surveillance, La FM Radio reported Monday.
In September authorities announced that Muñoz was under preliminary investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office for his alleged role in the wiretapping scandal.
Muñoz also accused several former officials of withholding information in the wiretapping investigations. He said that “what has been proved here is my support for the investigation in [the last] 24 months, in contrast to some former employees who have concealed, removed [and] hidden information, and have only come out two days before they have court rulings.”
He further stated that he feels calm about his explanations to the Prosecutor General’s Office and so will not leave his post, as some victims of the wiretapping have requested.
“When you have acted absolutely ethically and in accordance with the law, you are are totally calm. This was an opportunity for a citizen and a public servant to be able to provide evidence for the Prosecutor General’s Office so that it can continue clarifying the truth in this process,” he continued.
Following his questioning, the new Prosecutor General Viviane Morales will analyze the evidence given by Muñoz and decide whether he goes before the judges to have charges formally brought against him.
