Coal workers at Cerrejon, Colombia’s largest exporter, have voted to strike after the union faild to reach a new compensation deal, news agency Reuters reported Thursday.
Cerrejon produces 85,000 tons of coal per day and a strik would put a damper on Colombia’s coal exports.
The union has not indicated when the strike will take place, but according to Colombian law workers are not allowed to strike on the first two days after the vote and they have 10 days to take aciton. The workers are also not allowed to strike on the 10th day.
This comes just days after a coal mine explosion devistated the railroad connecting the northern Colombia mine with the country’s biggest port.
