The former United States ambassador to Colombia has praised Panama-Colombia border cooperation in the effort to rid the Darien gap of narco-trafficking, W Radio reported Wednesday.

In a visit to the border region, the former ambassador and current Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William Brownfield celebrated the law enforcement cooperation, supported by the U.S., which has successfully dismantled FARC settlements on the Panamanian side of the border.

Visiting rural and indigenous communities, the Drug Czar also emphasized the importance of community development in the fight against narco-trafficking.

Brownfield visited a joint Panama-Colombia security base in the Darien Gap, according the State Department website. It was part of a regional trip in which he is also scheduled to visit the Central American country of Guatemala.

From 2007 to 2010, Brownfield served as the U.S. ambassador to Colombia. He has served with the U.S. diplomatic corps in various countries throughout Latin America.
