Colombia’s Vice President Angelino Garzon on Monday called the country’s employers’ proposal to raise minimum wage with three per cent “very low and unfair.”
Instead, the Vice President supported the proposal of General Workers Confederation to raise minimum wage with six or seven per cent and said decent and just salaries will boost the economy.
“I personally think the three per cent rise is very low and unfair. I ask the employers to not become prisoners of their proposal of three per cent,” Garzon said in a press release.
The country’s largest union, the CUT, called the employers’ proposal “miserable” and demands a 12 per cent rise.
The Vice President urged unions and employers to resume talks and find a compromise.
Colombia’s 2010 minimum wage is COP515,000 ($268).
