Colombia’s outgoing prosecutor general on Wednesday called for legislation to prosecute defense attorneys who use “tricks” to delay criminal trials against their clients.
According to Prosecutor General Guillermo Mendoza, lawyers of state agents who are suspected of involvement in the high profile wiretap scandal or the extrajudicial killings of civilians are using all kinds of “tricks” to delay the court cases.
In response, the Prosecutor General’s Office has “taken some decisions,” but according to Mendoza, Congress must come up with legislation to discourage or prosecute illegal means of frustrating justice.
“The cases are worrying and when referring to the ‘false positives’ one really does not understand. Congress should issue a law to investigate and judge” lawyers who take the defense of their clients too far, Mendoza told W Radio.
