A former official of Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS accused of involvement in the wiretap scandal on Monday arranged a plea bargain with the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The intelligence agency’s former operations coordinator Fabio Duarte Traslaviña accepted responsibility in the wiretapping of opponents of former president Alvaro Uribe in the hope that his confession will result in a lower sentence.
Duarte Traslaviña was operations coordinator under former director Maria Del Pilar Hurtado, who, while also under investigation, left the country and was granted political asylum by Panama last week.
According to Duarte Traslaviña, the orders to illegally wiretap Supreme Court judges, journalists, politicians and human rights workers came directly from Del Pilar Hurtado.
Depending on the court, the former intelligence official faces eight to ten years in jail.
