Colombia’s Supreme Court revealed that death threats have been made against Judge Augusto Ibañez and called for government protection for the magistrate and other judges who face intimidation.
According to the Supreme Court, the threats were sent from the Palo Gordo de Giron prison in the Santander department.
The court expressed its concern over the threats and said that other magistrates had also received death threats over the last few days. It called for state authorities “to spare no effort in providing protection to the magistrates as well as their families because of the cited threats.”
This is not the first time that Supreme Court magistrates have received death threats.
In June Judge Jenny Jimenez received threatening phone calls after then-President Alvaro Uribe criticized her decision to arrest Mario Aranguren, former director of the government’s Financial Information and Analysis Unit. In September she announced plans to take her case to the United Nations, because the threats have continued and she has not received any state protection.
