Two earthquakes hit south-west Colombia on Monday afternoon, causing panic, but leaving no casualties or damaged buildings, authorities said.
The National Seismological Network of Colombia (known by its Spanish acronym RSCN) confirmed that earthquakes with magnitudes 4 and 4.1 on the Richter scale hit the Nariño department within 38 minutes of each other.
According to the RSCN, the first earthquake hit at 1:50PM local time, with an epicenter near the border of Ecuador, 9.3 kilometers northwest of Pasto, capital of the Nariño department. The center did not confirm if the earthquake was related to the recent eruption of the Galeras volcano in the same area.
A second earthquake hit the region at 2:28PM, this time with an epicenter north-east of the town of Ginebra in the Valle de Cauca department. The effects were felt in the departmental capital of Cali, though again no damage or casualties were reported.
