Cali brought to a halt by bus blockades

Bus drivers in the western city of Cali have blockaded main roads in the city, in protest of changes made by the city’s mass transit system (MIO).

The blockade began in the early hours of Wednesday morning in which the main north, east and western entrances to the city were blocked by protesting bus drivers, according to El Pais newspaper.

El Pais reported that from last week the service provider began cancelling traditional bus routes in the city and cut 62 vehicles from the service, leaving various communities in the city without public transport.

Caracol radio claims that the protests were organized in collaboration with the local communities affected by the cuts. Protests are planned to last until Friday, in which 1,347 vehicles will be involved in blockades and strikes.

This latest protest against MIO is the second in two months, with almost 2000 citizens taking to the streets in February to demand changes to their public transport service.
