A study reveals that 7 out of 10 mothers in Colombia’s capital Bogota beat their children, reported newspaper El Tiempo Tuesday.
Of the annual 4,500 child abuse cases reported in Colombia, almost all originate in the capital, said the newspaper.
Bogota’s city council drafted an agreement on Monday that plans to reduce domestic violence through educational programs.
Councilwoman Martha Ordonez, a representative of the Partido de la U, has spearheaded the effort to promote programs that “aim to teach parents about child rearing methods that are not abusive, degrading, or humiliating.”
If the bill is passed by the city council, Bogota would be the first city in Colombia to prohibit physical punishment in households.
