Plans are underway to construct a $50 million port in Barranquilla, Colombia’s main port to the Caribbean, reported newspaper La Republica Monday.
Construction company Inacar is working on getting permits from the Caribbean city to build River Port, a private port which will accommodate Italcol, a company that processes concentrated food products, and Coquecol, which exports coal.
The project, which includes the construction of a pier to accommodate three ships, a coal storage yard and a food processing plant, is scheduled to commence in February.
“This is going to allow for decongestion in the port area, and allow businesses to expand their plants,” said the manager of Inacar, Gustavo Duarte, to the newspaper.
River Port will help expand production and exports into the Caribbean market for both the companies.
The construction project, in addition to two other Inacar construction projects in Barranquilla, is expected to generate between 400 and 500 direct jobs as well as more indirectly through their construction.
