4 soldiers sentenced to 35 years for ‘false positives’

Four soldiers were sentenced to 35 years in jail in Yarumal, Antiquia for their involvement
in the assassination of two civilians that were presented as guerrillas
who had died in battle.

The court ruled that the four men — members of an anti-guerrilla group attached to the Fourth Army Battalion — murdered engineer Gonzalo Correa Roldan and his friend Mauricio Mazo Zapata in a rural area in the municipality of Yarumal.

The soldiers then presented the two men as guerrillas killed in combat and reportedly received a large sum of money. The two men were buried unidentified.

Phone records and inconsistency in the soldiers’ testimonies led to the conviction of these four men for ‘false positives’, Caracol Radio reported Monday.
