Four police officers were killed and five injured in the southern Colombian department of Nariño, in an attack authorities attribute to the leftist guerrilla group FARC, newspaper El Tiempo reported Wednesday.
Authorities said the FARC’s 29th Front are responsible for the attack which occurred at 10:00AM when a police patrol left the town of Llorente and was ambushed by insurgents who shot at them with heavy weaponry.
Fabio Trujillo, the government secretary of Nariño, said that the Llorente Station commander is among the four fatally wounded police officers.
The attack took place as the police patrol were transferring to the port city of Tumaco some 40 minutes away.
The area has a high infiltration of the FARC and criminal gangs such as “Los Rastrojos.”
