Nearly one-third of Colombian government subsidies for the poor end up in the pockets of the upper class, the country’s development agency said Thursday.
In a report, development agency Fedesarollo said that 40% of the Colombian population does not receive a peso of the money spent by the government in pensions. Instead, a large chunk of this money goes to the 20% of the population with the highest income.
The same happens with child support and health care subsidies, the report said.
Fedesarollo director Roberto Steiner called the distribution of subsidies “shameful” and said Colombia has a serious problem in correctly targeting its subsidies to those who need them.
