The floods that hit Tumaco on Colombia’s Pacific coast left six people
dead and 24,000 people homeless, Interior and Justice Minister Fabio
Valencia Cossio said Tuesday. 27 people are still missing.
In an interview with Caracol Radio, the Minister said the situation is still very delicate, because there is no access to clean water and the area around port city Tumaco is without electricity and gas.
The floods washed away at least 247 houses.
Security forces are deployed to help the victims, but the Minister asked the Red Cross to be ready to continue giving aid.
The floods occurred after heavy rains in the region caused the river Mira to flood.
Rains also caused three rivers to flood in Popayán. In the Colombian capital Bogotá heavy rains caused chaos in traffic.
