Colombia’s agriculture minister announced a $220 million fund to help agricultural producers and farmers who have been financially affected by the heavy seasonal rains, local media reported Friday.
Agriculture Minister Juan Carlos Restrepo said the aid is to assist agriculturalists who have been hurt financially by the heavy seasonal rains, which have flooded over 2.5 million acres of farmland, destroyed or damaged housing, and killed farm animals.
Restrepo said that rural inhabitants who have been affected should go to the town hall in their municipality and request a certificate from the Local Committee for Disaster Prevention and Assistance (Clopad).
The certificate is necessary to be able to receive financial support that the government has prepared to attend to the emergency. The figure earmarked for the agricultural sector is much higher than the $77 million announced previously.
