21 women will compete for the title of ‘Ms. Neiva,’ a beauty pageant hosted by Colombia’s south central department of Hulia.

While the evening gown and swimsuit competitions are important for judges, some consider the dance component to be the most important.

“Within this group of candidates is the woman responsible for representing the Department of Hulia in the ‘Reign Neivanos,’ so it is very important that these girls have been preparing for the dance both physically and intellectually,” said a former attendant.

The current titleholder is the 20 year old Ms. Maria Alejandra Salinas Leon. In an interview with La Nacion, Ms. Salinas Leon explains the importance of culture and heritage for the competition.

“Since childhood I have chosen this road. It takes your whole life to prepare for. I danced since age two, but this is something that needs to be perfected on an every day basis. Besides, my parents have been the creators of this culture and identity and vibe that I feel in my heart. “

The new Ms. Neiva will be chosen on June 24.
