The majority of police officers in Colombia have signed a commitment to good behavior, following various incidents concerning policemen driving while under the influence of alcohol, El Tiempo reported Friday.
General Oscar Naranjo, the chief of the National Police, announced that 130,000 men of the 162,000 under his command have signed documents promising to avoid acts of indiscipline and further drunk-driving incidents.
“It is unacceptable that a police officer displays bad behavior,” he said.
The news comes soon after the suicide of policeman Pedro Delgado, who had been chased and apprehended at his home after crashing into a taxi while driving under the influence and fleeing the scene. He was on his way to be alcohol-tested when he took his own life.
Lieutenant Colonel Luz Eugenio Molta Silva and two assistant superintendents have also been accused of driving while intoxicated and face further investigation.
General Naranjo added that a deal has been made with textile companies to prevent the free sale of police uniforms, following concerns over the increase in false police agents on the streets. Seven people have been arrested for the offence in the last month.
