The streets of Colombia’s second city, Medellin, saw the arrival of a 1,300 strong force of new soldiers on Friday intent upon strengthening the current, fragile security situation in the city and the surrounding Aburra Valley.
This group of soldiers form part of the 3,000 agents promised by Colombia’s national government to increase the security manpower in the region in response to the recent rapid escalation of gang violence and drug warfare within Medellin and the surrounding metropolitan area, reported Colombian media.
Over the coming months, it will be the responsibility of Medellin’s Police Commander to assign the new security forces to the metropolitan areas where the violence and insecurity is at its worst and the civil population requires the utmost protection.
