Colombian air force pilots bombed a FARC camp near San Roque in Antioquia early Thursday, killing 11 rebels of the Ninth Front, possibly including the unit leader, “Danilo.”
Colombia’s defense minister confirmed the raid, which occurred at 4AM at the remote camp. The camp was located with the help of intelligence gathered by the national police, who signaled the likely presence of the guerrilla chief, who is known as “Danilo,” El Tiempo reported Thursday.
Colombian soldiers are now arriving to the scene to recover the bodies and gather further intelligence.
It has not yet been confirmed whether the guerrilla chief was among the dead, and defense sources say they are awaiting autopsy results. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of more rebel casualties, since there were reportedly twenty insurgents occupying the camp.
General Freddy Padilla, commander of the Colombian armed forces, will give more details on the operation in the coming hours.
