Ten men who are part of a criminal group called “Los Chacales” were arrested in Colombia’s western department Choco for accusations of “conspiracy to partake in drug trafficking,” local media reported Monday.
According to newspaper El Espectador, Colombia’s Navy and Prosecutor General on Sunday led raids in Choco’s capital city Quibdo to uncover drug trafficking plots across the country’s pacific coast.
Through ongoing investigations since 2010, the authorities in Choco established that the assailants in question have been linked to maritime piracy groups that deliver packages of drugs or, ‘White Fish,’ by launching said packages off the sides of boats to be collected.
The arrested were processed Monday for their knowledge of such maritime routes, figuring out ways to bypass security guards, and collecting narcotic substances and forwarding them to Central America and the United States.
“Los Chacales” were able to operate in this area after allegedly striking a truce with large Colombia drug gang, “Los Rastrojos,” who operate in the Choco area.
All defendants were incarcerated but for one who was placed on house arrest due to health issues.
