Alleged FARC attacks in southwest Colombia Wednesday left one dead and five more injured.
Local media report that simultaneous attacks in the villages of Totoro and Jambalo result in the death of one Colombian soldier while five others are injured.
According to Imelda Sanchez, the Government Secretary of the municipality in question, the situation in said villages is still tenuous. Sanchez told Caracol Radio that several villagers have fled their homes, many stores have closed up shop and some government buildings and schools have become shelters for those seeking refuge from all the chaos and violence.
The deteriorating security situation comes amidst the first peace talks between the Colombian government and the country’s oldest and most influential rebel group in ten years.
Both sides have not agreed to halt military operations during negotiations and the administration of President Juan Manuel Santos has beefed up the armed forces and its budget in recent weeks.
